MEMPHIS – Video footage released Friday night shows Memphis police beating, kicking and using Tire Nichols, a 29-year-old black man.
in January 7 The encounter began at a traffic stop at an intersection, where police approached Mr. Nichols’ car, yelled, and threatened him with a gun. The police forcefully open the driver’s side door and pull Mr. Nichols out of the car, protesting that he is “doing nothing”.
He fell to the ground and begged police to stop, pressing on various parts of his body and saying he was “just trying to go home”. He didn’t put up any resistance, but the police kept threatening to hurt him more and ordered him to lie down on the ground. The officer tells Mr Nicholls to ‘get your butt out’ and ‘break’ his hands. About two minutes into the altercation, a police officer pepper sprayed him in the face. At that moment, Mr. Nichols got up off the ground and ran from the officers, one of whom fired a taser at him.
About eight minutes later, after a chase, police find Mr Nichols in a suburban neighborhood near his home and pin him to the ground. A severe beating ensues as Mr Nichols screams in pain and cries repeatedly for his mother. Body worn and surveillance cameras show officers continuing to attack Mr. Nichols. One of them kicked him in the face so hard he almost fell.
Mr. Nichols seemed unresponsive during the beating, which lasted about three minutes. He moved his hands to cover his face a few times, as if he was going to get away from hitting the officers.
Mr. Nicholls stumbles to his feet as the officer strikes him from behind with a baton, and the officer grabs his arm. As the two officers put their arms behind their backs, a third agent delivers a series of powerful punches. Finally, that officer struck Mr. Nichols three times on the head while standing behind the officer, causing Mr. Nichols to fall to the ground. In the scene of the traffic stop, the body camera footage of an officer who was not involved in the chase captures his reaction when he realizes that his colleagues have killed Mr. Nichols. “I hope they kick each other,” he said twice. At the end of the beating, Mr. Nichols lies on his back and dazed. The officer drags him into a patrol car and turns his back on him. Video footage does not show him undergoing serious treatment for several minutes.
Nichols, who worked at a FedEx facility and was the father of a 4-year-old boy, died in hospital three days later. Five officers were fired last week and each charged with seven counts Thursday, the most egregious of which was first-degree murder, which Memphis and other cities are gearing up for protests. Memphis Police Chief Cereline Davis told NBC News that she could not find out why Nichols was arrested in the first place. Police initially said the incident began with a traffic stop on suspicion of reckless driving.
